Carolina Cup 2009
COLLEGE PARK CHANGES!!! at the Carolina First Carolina Cup, Saturday, March 28, 2009: The Carolina First Carolina Cup has grown considerably from the first inaugural race in 1930 with 3,000 in attendance to become the largest race on the steeplechase circuit with over 65,000 racing fans attending today. The ‘Cup’ has become the biggest outdoor lawn party of the season with the girls in the latest spring sundresses and hats. Not to be outdone, the guys will be in their bow ties. The most common phrase heard over the years is “I went to the Cup and never saw a horse!” That too has changed as more and more racing fans are making their way to the fence to catch a glimpse of the horses thundering by to the finish line. The horses make a beautiful backdrop for this must attend party of the spring. College Park was established in 1997 to accommodate the growing numbers of the young college crowd that wanted to attend the ‘Cup’. Fraternities and Sororities are drawing bigger numbers to their tailgate parties and more college students are coming, which has increased the demand for parking spaces. The 2007 Carolina Cup brought the first of the changes to College Park. The entire area was reconfigured and moved back to clear the area along the fence line. This was done first for safety reasons and also to eliminate the congestion and allow everyone a chance to actually see a horse race. This change has been a big hit with the college crowd and a change that was welcomed by all. The demands for spaces keep growing and the upcoming Carolina First Carolina Cup on March 28th will again show more changes. Wendy Kingsley, Director of Marketing said, “We are not turning anyone away. The changes that we’re initiating will make College Park a safer place and at the same time, give everyone plenty of room for tailgating.” An additional “big” row with the 20X20 tents has been added. So rows A, B, and C are now the large spaces with a 20X20 tent PROVIDED BY US! (no general admission tickets included) Rows D and E have doubled in size! Twice the space, twice the fun!!!!! Increasing the size of the parking spaces meant having to lower the actual number of spaces that will be available. So, don’t delay in reserving your space. The sooner, the better! They are going quickly. The majority of students do come in buses and walk into College Park. Many car pool together, park in General Parking and walk into College Park. The good news is that with this reconfiguration of parking spaces, there will be more room to accommodate the tailgate parties. More fun will be had by all…and you can even see a horse race! The deadline to reserve a parking space in College Park is Friday, February 13th, 2009. General Admission tickets are $25.00 per person before March 13st, $40.00 thereafter.
